Jesmonite
For all of our current product line, we use Jesmonite, which was invented in the UK in 1984 as a lightweight alternative to cast concrete and a safe alternative to fiberglass. It is a type of eco-resin that can be used as a substitute for polyester GP resin due to its water-based and non-toxic properties. Jesmonite was originally adopted by architects and builders, but it has now also become a popular choice among designers and artists. The Jesmonite we use is AC730.
The benefits of our Jesmonite AC730 are:
— Excellent strength and durability, with high impact resistance
— Lighter than stone, glass-reinforced concrete, and traditional sand and cement products
— Little waste material: it is very easy to rework 'waste' from the making or to turn experiments gone wrong into new items
— Heat/fire resistant
— Non-toxic
— Solvent & VOC free
— Water-based
— Our Jesmonite pigments are equally non-toxic, solvent & VOC free
Is my Jesmonite piece waterproof?
All our Jesmonite pieces are sealed using a water-based sealer that protects against water, grease, and staining. The sealer is also UV resistant, so your pieces will not discolor over time.
How do I care for my Jesmonite pieces?
You can dab your Jesmonite pieces with a soft damp cloth. In case of spillage, we recommend cleaning immediately by dabbing with a soft sponge, warm soapy water, and wiping dry afterward. We do not advise submerging or leaving your Jesmonite pieces sitting in water. Please note that for highly pigmented pieces, you might be left with stains on your cloth when wiping dry.
Jesmonite is not dishwasher safe, and please do not use metal scourers, abrasive cleaners, detergents, or acidic products.
Where are your products made?
They are handmade in our studio based in Woolwich.
Care instructions
Jesmonite general care
You can dab (do not rub) your Jesmonite pieces with a soft damp cloth. In case of spillage, we recommend cleaning immediately using warm soapy water if needed and wiping dry afterward. Please do not use a metal scourer or rough cloth as this will cause scratches on the surface. Each piece is sealed for waterproofing; however, we do not advise submerging or leaving your Jesmonite pieces sitting in water.
Jesmonite candle holders
Carefully remove spilled wax from your candle holder as soon as the wax has hardened. To remove dried spilled wax from your candle holder, put the holder in the freezer until the wax is frozen. This causes the wax to harden and shrink and come off easier. If you use a candle that is too narrow, you can add some width to the bottom of the candle by wrapping a strip of aluminum foil around the candle until it fits the holder perfectly. If your candle is slightly too wide for the holder, you can carefully scrape some wax off the candle at the bottom with a knife. Scrape off only thin layers at a time to make sure your candle will not become too narrow for the holder.
Jesmonite incense holders
To remove any burnt pieces or ashes, carefully empty the bowl/holder over a bin and, if needed, blow gently to help. Make sure not to rub to avoid marks setting in. After most or all of the ashes are removed, dab with a soft damp cloth to pick up any leftover particles.
